A New Diaspora Press: Persian Periodicals in 1950s Israel

Iranian Jews produced roughly 15 periodicals during the twentieth century, on which some initial work has been undertaken. These periodicals, newspapers, and pamphlets gave a voice to community served foster consolidation of political subjectivity syncretic national ideologies within public sphere. With that, scholarship still lacks any significant exploration publications by those who emigrated Israel after it declared independence in 1948. In an step towards illuminating these fruitful historical resources, this article views parallel two first years Israeli statehood: Kurosh Setareh-ye Sharq. Following short background arrival country conditions they faced, analyses as manifestations distinct approaches adaptation new environment. Kurosh, there is evidence anti-establishment spirit independence, facilitating activistic assertive Jewish consciousness land that was anchored connection Iranianness. Sharq, meanwhile, we find top-down discursive social pressures accept normative vision identity Israel.
